Llanddewi (Gower)

Hospitaller

All sites

A south-Gower parish run as a Hospitaller manor with Llanmadoc — the two together made up the Knights of St John's Gower estate, dependent on Slebech.

Llanddewi, on the limestone plateau of south Gower, is regularly paired with Llanmadoc in the medieval records — the two parishes together made up the Knights Hospitaller's interest on the Gower peninsula, held as a single manor under Slebech commandery.

Like Llanmadoc, Llanddewi is often loosely called a Templar site, but the surviving documentation is Hospitaller. The estate combined arable, sheep pasture and rights to the wreck and driftwood of a treacherous stretch of coast.

The medieval church of St David sits in the middle of the parish, and a fine dovecote on the neighbouring farm survives from the later monastic phase of the estate.

Visiting

Llanddewi is signposted from the A4118 on south Gower. It pairs naturally with a visit to Llanmadoc on the north coast for a full picture of the Gower estate.
