Freystrop

Templar, later Hospitaller

All sites

A small parish on the west bank of the Cleddau, held as one of Slebech's dependent granges and listed under the commandery in the 1338 Hospitaller survey.

Freystrop, immediately across the Cleddau from Slebech, appears among the properties of Slebech commandery in the Hospitallers' 1338 return, and is generally accepted as one of the granges the order inherited from the Templars in 1312.

The parish gave the house arable ground, a mill site on one of the tributary streams and — crucially — a landing on the tidal river that let goods be moved by water rather than by cart. The medieval church of St Justinian is heavily restored, but the churchyard and its position above the creek preserve something of the medieval setting.

Visiting

Freystrop is signposted from the A4076 north of Milford Haven. Park at the church and walk the lanes down toward Little Milford on the Cleddau.
