Amroth
Templar, later Hospitaller
A coastal manor on Carmarthen Bay held under Slebech commandery, giving the house a foothold on the sea for its wool and hide trade.
The manor of Amroth, on the eastern end of Carmarthen Bay, is listed among the properties of Slebech in the Hospitallers' 1338 return and is accepted as one of the estates the order took over from the Templars in 1312.
Its value lay in its coastline: a sheltered beach, fishing rights and driftwood salvage on a busy stretch of the Bristol Channel. For a religious house running an export trade in wool and hides the coast was as important as the fields.
The medieval church of St Elidyr sits above the shore, and the line of the coast path passes directly through the old manorial land.
Visiting
Amroth is signposted from the A477 near Kilgetty. Park at the seafront and walk east on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path toward Wiseman's Bridge.
