To walk the narrow lane leading toward the church of Saint Ismael in Rosemarket today is to tread upon the ghost of an industrialised agriculture. There is a specific quietude to these Pembrokeshire valleys, yet in the thirteenth century, this was a landscape of profound noise: the rhythmic thud of the mill-wheel, the lowing of cattle gathered for the tithe, and the administrative bustle of the preceptor’s agents. While Slebech served as the nerve centre on the banks of the Eastern Cleddau, its survival and its contribution to the crusading cause depended entirely upon a constellation of satellite granges. These were not merely remote farms but integral nodes in a logistical network designed to extract the maximum possible surplus from the fertile soils of the rhos. The evidence for these holdings is found not in soaring masonry, but in the dry ledger of the 1338 Report of Philip de Thame, which provides a retrospective glance at an estate already ancient by the time the Hospitallers had consolidated the former Templar interests.

The primary function of the Pembrokeshire granges was the production of moveables—grain, wool, and cheese—that could be converted into responsiones, the thirty-three percent of gross income sent annually to the Order's headquarters in the East. At Rosemarket, the gift of the early Flemish settlers, the focus was firmly on the arable. The heavy, damp soils of the coastal plateau required a sophisticated approach to cereal production, and the record suggests a substantial output of wheat and oats. Here, the Order functioned as a corporate landlord, managing the open-field system alongside their tenants. Unlike the sheltered valleys of the Cleddau, Rosemarket was exposed and productive, a place where the monastic peace of the Order was secondary to the hard reality of the plough and the winnowing floor. The church itself, which survives in its medieval outline, served as the focal point for the collection of tithes, ensuring that even those who did not work the Order's direct demesne still contributed to the sustenance of the Jerusalem garrison.

Moving inland toward the foothills of the Preseli Mountains, the character of the estate shifted from the cereal-heavy lowlands to the pastoral economy of Maenclochog. This was a different world from the Flemish-speaking southern hundreds. At Maenclochog, the Order held the church and certain lands amidst a more traditionally Welsh landscape, where the wealth lay in cattle and sheep. The geography here is rugged, defined by the scree-strewn slopes and the high grazing of the Commons. Westward at Freystrop and south toward Amroth, the landscape offered another essential resource: the power of water. The mills of the Pembrokeshire granges were among their most lucrative assets. At Freystrop, the topography allowed for the damming of small streams to turn the stones that ground the grain of the local tenantry. The site of Templeton, or Villa Templariorum, remains the most evocatively named of these satellites. Situated on the ridge between the Eastern and Western Cleddau, it functioned as a planned settlement, perhaps intended to act as a local market hub or a defensive outpost for the Order's tenants. The long, narrow burgage plots still visible in the village's layout suggest a deliberate attempt at urbanisation, a move common among the Marcher lords but pursued with particular vigour by the Templars and later the Hospitallers. Templeton was not merely a farm; it was a statement of tenurial intent. By establishing a settled community of rent-paying tenants, the Order created a stable tax base that was less susceptible to the fluctuations of the harvest than a pure demesne farm. It was a sophisticated piece of medieval land management, blending the roles of the landlord, the priest, and the soldier-administrator into a single landscape.

What links these disparate sites—the mills of Freystrop, the sheep-walks of Maenclochog, and the planned streets of Templeton—is their orientation toward a single, distant goal. We cannot know if the labourers who worked the heavy clays of Amroth or the tenants who brought their grain to the Rosemarket tithe barn felt any personal connection to the defence of Acre or Rhodes. For them, life was a matter of rents, seasons, and local justice. Yet, the evidence suggests that the Slebech administration was remarkably efficient at channelling this local Pembrokeshire surplus into the global machinery of the Crusades. The granges were the cellular structure of the Order, each one breathing life into the larger body. Without the mundane details of the Pembrokeshire harvest, the grand architecture of the Crusader states would have lacked the marrow to survive.

The logistical complexity of these Pembrokeshire holdings was mirrored across the border, where the Order's Welsh estates began to interface with the marcher lordships of the east.
